Rumor: Pokemon Sword and Shield Might Be Compatible With Pokemon GO

Few months ago, Nintendo Direct announced a brand new Pokemon game coming to Nintendo Switch this summer - Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are the upcoming role-playing video games developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokemon Company and Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. They will be the first main series games in the eighth generation of the long-running Pokemon Series. Pokemon Sword and Moon will take place in the Galar region, a large, narrow expanse of land and one of many regions in the Pokemon world.

Pokemon GO has been insanely successful since it was first launched in 2016. So it makes perfect sense for Game Freak to make the popular mobile game compatible with its upcoming Switch release, Pokemon Sword and Shield.

The famous Pokemon GO dataminer, Chrales discovered the latest update for the mobile app - Version 0.143.0 - features a string referred to as "koala_settings" for a separate app.

According to the source, the codename "koala" might be Sword and Shield's internal codename, which is said to match the naming convention Game Freak uses to link each game with nature or an animal. The previous release, Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee is codenamed "beluga" and has its own dedicated settings screen inside Pokemon GO to connect the two games.

Given the success of Niantic's augmented reality gaming experience, a connection with the upcoming Switch release seems to be quite feasible.
