Directed by Tomoka Nagaoka and screen played by Takahiro Okura, the famous Japanese detective anime, Detective Conan has released its 23rd movie on April 21, 2019 in Japan, entitled – Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire, becoming the last movie aired in the Heisei period.
For those who are unfamiliar with Detective Conan (or also known as Case Closed in the United States), the series was originally created by Gosho Aoyama. The story follows a high schooler detective Shinichi Kudo who works with the police to solve cases. When investigating a crime syndicate known as the Black Organization, he was poisoned. But instead of killing him, the poison reverts him to a child. Using his new childhood alias Conan Edogawa and keeping his true identity a secret, he vows to solve more cases and eventually put a stop to the crimes of the Black Organization.
The world’s greatest blue sapphire, the “Blue Lapis Fist”, said to have sunk in a pirate ship in the late 19th century, on the coasts of Singapore. A local millionaire plots to retrieve it and when it’s exhibited in an exhibition at the Singapore Marina Bay Sands hotel, a murder takes place. A bloody Kaitou Kid announcement card is found in the crime scene. As usual, the world’s famous phantom thief – Kaito Kid made his appearance in the movie as well as disguised himself as Shinichi Kudo while working to solve the case with Conan.
This is the first movie setting in another Asian country, which had never happened in the manga and anime series. Interestingly enough, this is also the first Detective Conan movie directed by a woman, Tomoka Nagaoka, and is likely to become the highest-grossing movie directed by a woman in Japan.
The 23rd movie entry in the franchise has made 422 million yen on its opening day and 1.9 billion yen in the first three days of the release, becoming the second highest grossing film of the franchise, just behind Zero the Enforcer.
